Where Christian parents learn from, grow with, and encourage one another.

I have a 3rd grade kid who's techers are saying needs to be reading more challenging stuff. They naturally suggested Harry Potter.. which from a purly academic standpoint would be exactly the challenge they're looking for.

At this point though I'd like to offer alternatives. I thought of LOTR and The Narnia books...

What other books (with a series) would you suggest? They don't nessecarily have to be Christian.

You might also try the Series of Unfortunate Events (Lemony Snicket). The vocabulary level is high and my daughter started reading them with a dictionary close by - which is a good thing!

That is a great series... I just didn't want to mention it here because some people think it's OF THE DEVIL!!!

Speaking of series... one of my kids suggested "Warriors" by Erin Hunter... anyone know anything?

Dragons in Our Midst series (by Bryan Davis)
The Lost Books series (by Ted Dekker)
Landon Snow series (by R.K. Mortenson)

Warriors (the original series) and its variant sequels are good reads. I have read the first series and I likened them to a LOTR sage but with cats instead of people, elves, etc.

My third grader (son) likes The Three Investigators (which is not all that challenging but a fun read, great personality and character interaction aside).
