Where Christian parents learn from, grow with, and encourage one another.

Is it just me or do 4-6 year olds seem more 'grown-up' than we were. I don't remember being interested in elementary pop-culture stuff at their age.

Example:

Today my daughter and I were looking through posters in Walmart (typically a semi-dangerous task, but my store only has one Jessica Alba poster... and she's to right to be wrong... kidding!). As I thumbed through hoping for a Star Wars poster that wasn't Animated, I noticed my daughter was calling out (what I thought to be) random names.

"Skywalker"

"Hannah Montana"

"High School Musical"

"Princesses!!!!!"

"More Princesses!!!!"

"Doggies in Shoes!!!! Ha ha!!!"

"Jonas Brothers"

She blew my mind (except for the doggies in shoes... common... they're doggies... in shoes!!). She knew all of their names. She's FOUR!!!

Are we in trouble? I know I am. I'm going to have to lock her in a room when she turns 6 and let her out at 18 or so.

I would worry more about it... but I know them all too. I keep my finger on pulse of her world. But will I always be up-to-date? Surely not. There will be a time when my jeans become the polyester pants of my generation... and I will fail.

My hope, my personal challenge, is for her family to be the only REAL thing in her life. I can never be as cool as a Jonas Brother... but they can never be there for her like I can.

To deep? Hey, I'm a Dad. Butterfly kisses and all that.

Your thoughts?

Oh I totally agree!! I see kids this age acting and sounding so grown up all the time! Have you noticed that the clothing style for preschoolers is often even grown up looking? I feel like our young kids are being pushed more and more to grow up too fast. When I was 4 I didn't know anything about music groups or fashion! Luckily for me my 4 year old isn't interested in that type of stuff yet. What should our role, as parents, be in all this? Do we allow them to pursue these "grown up" things or do we shield them from it? I monitor what she watches and listens to pretty closely. It is amazing how music and TV can influence our young kids. For example, my daughter saw a commercial about a product that was suppose to "not be sold in stores". It was some plant watering thing, she insisted that we "couldn't live without it". Well that same day we went to Walgreens and the first thing she sees is that very product being sold in a store! She was astonished that the TV had lied to her. Needless to say this ended up being a very good learning opportunity for her.

Oh and as far as locking her in her room until she is 18, I would suggest maybe keeping her in there until she is 23 lol!
